"Canelo is not worthy of being in the pound-for-pound rankings"

The controversy in boxing continues. Now the trainer of Jermell Charlo, super welterweight champion and regarded as the best in the world, has set the boxing world on fire with some words that will create a lot of debate.

Derrick James has questioned how it could be that Canelo Alvarez is in the Pound for Pound lists, a ranking of professional boxers made by The Ring magazine in which it chooses the best fighters in relation to others with different weight. As these fighters do not compete against each other, this list is very subjective and different criteria are looked at.

"It means these guys are so good that if they fought in any division they would be the best," James told FightHype.

"Canelo made light heavyweight, so that means that's his limit and therefore he can't be on the list."

After losing to Dmitry Bivol on May 7, the world-class trainer believes he is "not worthy of being on this list" because he definitely found his ceiling as a fighter.

"It's not my opinion, it's the truth." he continued.

"Pound-for-pound is a mythical ideal. If a fighter is that good, he fights at light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight."

Canelo isn't the only one on the receiving end

Derrick James didn't stop at Canelo. Ever since he saw his fighter was ranked No.9 after clinching the championship in undisputed fashion at 154 in May, he doesn't give credit to the rankings.

"Lomachenko lost three years ago, so how can he be on the list?" he pointed out.

"He knew his limit. His skills are phenomenal, but if he goes up to any weight, he loses, so he can't be on the list.

"The Canelo and Lomachenko spots are for Jermell."

Canelo will face Kazakhstan's Gennady Golovkin for the third time in his career on September 17 in Las Vegas, where he will look to put an end to the rivalry with a resounding victory.
