Verstappen celebrates in Spielberg "home win"

Red Bull Triumph on the Red Bull Ring

Max Verstappen won the 31st Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. The 20-year-old Dutchman won in Spielberg ahead of Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen, giving his racing team the first "home win" at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. Sebastian Vettel was third and took over the championship lead again, because world champion Lewis Hamilton had a car failure.

For Verstappen, who was cheered on by around 18,000 dutch fans, it was the fourth victory of his career, the first since Mexico in October 2017. In the fifth race at 47 degrees asphalt temperature at the Red Bull Ring, for the first time no Mercedes won. The Silver Arrows experienced a disaster, last year's winner Valtteri Bottas retired next to Hamilton with car issues. Also Daniel Ricciardo, in the second Red Bull did not see the checkered flag.

The three prominent failures benefited the riders from the other teams. Fourth was surprisingly the French Haas driver Romain Grosjean, who thus conquered his first championship points of the season. Behind him, Kevin Magnussen in second Haas and Force India drivers Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez came in fifth to seventh. There were also points for Fernando Alonso in the McLaren and Sauber duo Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson in the eighth to tenth.
