Jose Mourinho Appointed as Manager of FC Roma

Jose Mourinho has been appointed manager of Roma, the club announced. "We are thrilled and delighted to welcome Jose Mourinho into the AS Roma family. A great champion who has won trophies at every level, Jose will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project", said Roma’s President Dan Friedkin and Vice President Ryan Friedkin.

According to the contract, Mourinho will work for Roma until the end of the 2023/2024 season.

In a statement posted on the club’s social media, the Portuguese manager said the incredible passion of Roma’s fans as well as the owners "ambitions" had convinced him to accept the proposal.

"Together we want to build a winning project. I can't wait to start next season. Daje Roma!", Mourinho said

Earlier, Roma announced that incumbent manager Paulo Fonseca would leave the club at the end of the season. His sacking comes after Roma suffered a humiliating defeat in the Europa League, losing 6-2 to Manchester United.

The club is currently seventh in Serie A and is unlikely to qualify for international tournaments next season, so the Portuguese manager will likely focus on domestic trophies such as the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana during his first year in Rome.

Between 2008 and 2010, Mourinho trained another Italian club, Inter Milan, and won five trophies with the team.

Mourinho’s appointment comes two weeks after he was sacked by Tottenham, which he had led since 2019. The renowned manager was called in to strengthen the Spurs following their successful Champions League campaign in 2018/2019. However, under his leadership the club failed to win any trophies and finished in the middle of the table.
