Alaba set to miss Shakhtar Donetsk trip due to injury

David Alaba has returned injured to Real Madrid after being away on international duty with Austria.

With Eder Militao also in the same situation after suffering a setback against Brazil, it leaves Carlo Ancelotti's defensive plans in chaos ahead of his side's Champions League trip to Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

With Dani Carvajal also still sidelined, it leaves Los Blancos without three of their customary starters at the back.

If Alaba and Militao do miss out, then Ancelotti could line up with Nacho Fernandez and Jesus Vallejo at centre-back, with Lucas Vazquez at right-back and either Marcelo or Ferland Mendy at left-back.

But both are without recent game time, with Marcelo featuring for just two minutes this term, while Mendy has been out of action since March.

Hazard update

Eden Hazard is another Real Madrid player that seemed to pick up a knock over the international break, being forced off in Belgium's Nations League semi-final against France, but it is thought that it is just muscle overload. Nevertheless, he will be examined this Thursday afternoon.
