New Manchester City deal close for Phil Foden

Phil Foden is set to sign a new contract with Manchester City.

The 21-year-old midfielder's current deal runs until 2024, but the club have moved to tie down one of their most promising assets.

There are not likely to be any stumbling blocks to the deal, with Foden a lifelong City fan and enjoying playing under coach Pep Guardiola.

Foden has become a mainstay of the City squad over the last year, with impressive performances in the team convincing the hierarchy that he is ready and deserving of new terms.

Alongside his displays for City he has also starred for England, featuring in their run to the Euro 2020 final last summer, and starting in midfield for their last two World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.

And Foden compares favourably to some of the other standout talent of his generation around the globe, such as Pedri and Joao Felix.

Foden's impressive 2021

He has 33 goals and 24 assists from 130 career games for City, and with his strong 2020/21 campaign, in which he scored 16 goals and provided 10 assists in 50 appearances under Guardiola, he was rewarded with a place on the 30-man shortlist for the 2021 Ballon D'Or.

Having missed the closing stages of Euro 2020 due to non-selection and injury, it's unlikely to be his year, but he is tipped to win the award in years to come.

Foden's mix of energy, skill, passing, and goal involvements in the final third marks him out as a distinctive footballer, with a number of his contemporaries not able to tick all the boxes he can.

And under Guardiola he has the perfect tutor to reach his ability ceiling.

Foden likes the quiet life with his young family, and having been born in Stockport, it's clear that being around 'his' area is helping him find his high levels of performance.
