Pedri set to have huge release clause

Pedri is on the verge of signing a new contract at Barcelona which will raise his release clause to one billion euros.

The Blaugrana want to make it clear that the 18-year-old is going nowhere and that his future absolutely lies at the Camp Nou, where he will sign on until 2026.

Pedri's current deal has a release clause of a mere 400 million euros and is due to expire at the end of the season, although Barcelona had an option to extend it to 2024.

The last 14 months have been incredible for the Canary Island-born midfielder, from joining Barcelona to nailing down a spot in the team and then going on to star with Spain at Euro 2020, where he was widely regarded as one of the top performers.

The contract Pedri agreed in the summer of 2019, a year prior to his arrival at the Camp Nou, had therefore become obsolete and the new deal will therefore recognise his growth and importance to the team, which has perhaps come sooner than anyone could have expected when the Catalan club paid Las Palmas an initial fee of around five million euros for his services.

Higher release clause than Messi

Pedri's billion euro release clause will be a club record and a real statement of intent. Not even Lionel Messi had such a high figure in his contract, with his being set at 700 million euros, while Antoine Griezmann's was 800 million euros.

Getting Pedri tied down on a new and improved deal, worthy of his status in Ronald Koeman's team, was a priority for Barcelona, and with that all but tied up they will continue to work on a number of other key renewals: Ansu Fati, Gavi and Ousmane Dembele.
