Scaloni backs biennial World Cup: I like the idea

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has thrown his support behind the plans for a World Cup to be held every second year, with the boss of the Albiceleste explaining that it could reduce the physical demands placed on South American players who participate in the current World Cup qualifying format.

The proposal, put forward by Arsene Wenger, would also change World Cup qualifying and the matches to earn a place in the competition could be contested in a condensed space of one month.

"It's an idea that I like," Scaloni stated in a press conference ahead of Argentina's 2022 World Cup qualifier against Paraguay.

"It could be helpful in terms of reducing the wear and tear on players from all their trips.

"This would allow matches to be brought together to be played in one month, with shorter journeys. If that is the case then, as a coach of a South American national team, I would be in favour.

"I think the format is good for the rest of players, while I think it would logically be great for putting on a spectacle as we'd have a World Cup every second year."
