Angels' Shohei Ohtani, unanimous MVP in the AL
Los Angeles Angels' Shohei Ohtani became the first player from outside the American Continent to unanimously win the MLB Most Valuable Player award, with the designated hitter and pitcher taking the award in the American League, while Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper won in the National League.
Elite player as a hitter and pitcher
Ohtani swept the Baseball Writers' Association of America voting by garnering all 30 first-place votes, leaving the Toronto Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in second place, while his teammate in Canada, Marcus Semien took third place.
The Asian star is only the fifth unanimous MVP in either league this millennium, the others being Mike Trout (2014), Albert Pujols (2009), Barry Bonds (2002) and Bryce Harper (2015), who now won it uncontested.
Ohtani broke schemes as he was an elite player, as it has not been seen for almost a century, both offensively and defensively.
As a hitter he hit 46 home runs, eight triples and stole 26 bases, among other outstanding statistics. As a pitcher he pitched 130.1 innings with a 3.18 ERA and 156 strikeouts.
Second MVP for Bryce Harper
Bryce Harper won his second career Most Valuable Player award, his first since playing for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Harper garnered 17 of 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America, second place went to Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals, while Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres took third place.
To be able to win this award again means so much to me personally
Harper, at 29, became only the fourth player in MLB history to have multiple MVP winners before reaching his third decade, the others being Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Alex Rodriguez.
"To be able to win this award again means so much to me personally," Harper wrote in a statement according to ESPN. "I take pride in giving my all every time I'm on the field and playing the game the right way. I have great teammates and an incredible fan base who pushed me all season and helped bring this award back home to the great city of Philadelphia."
