Aston Villa are pushing for Gerrard and will make contact with Rangers

Premier League side Aston Villa are looking increasingly close to appointing Rangers boss and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as their new coach.

The Villains recently sacked Dean Smith from the role as a result of their underwhelming start to the Premier League season, and Gerrard is now expected to make the move south from Scotland to take his first job in English football.

Several British media outlets claim that Villa are keen to have the Englishman appointed before their next Premier League game against Brighton after the international break, with Gerrard currently readying his Rangers team for a Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Hibernian that same weekend.

The Glasgow Times are among the many outlets saying that Villa will now make a formal approach to Rangers, and they're hoping to offer a multi-million compensation deal to convince the Scottish side to part ways with their coach after almost four years in the job.

Life in Glasgow is unlikely to get any better for Gerrard, who will be fondly remembered at Rangers for ending Celtic's chances of winning ten consecutive Scottish Premiership titles, ending their run at nine last season.

Gerrard currently has Rangers top of the table again. They sit on 30 points from 13 games and four clear of Celtic.
