Why Unai Emery turned down Newcastle United

Unai Emery confirmed on Wednesday that he will be staying with Villarreal rather than joining Newcastle United.

It was quite the turnaround, given Emery had appeared set on leaving the Yellow Submarine and returning to the Premier League.

The rejection centred on a termination clause that would've seen Emery sacked if Newcastle were to get relegated this season under him.

Alongside that, Emery was known to be cross at the interest in him coming out just before his side took on Young Boys in a crucial Champions League encounter on Tuesday night.

He also was wary on entering into a club in chaos, with the club's takeover being mired in controversy, and various appointments yet to be made off the field.

As such, Emery informed Villarreal president Fernando Roig that he would be staying in Spain with the Europa League champions.

Who could Newcastle turn to?

Ex-Bournemouth coach Eddie Howe is said to be the next man in line for the job.
