Zidane's unfulfilled dream

Zinedine Zidane is living a very relaxed life after leaving Real Madrid, he spends his time playing padel, although he freely admits there is one source of frustration from his career based on a dream he didn't get to fulfil.

As a player, Zidane represented some quite wonderful clubs - Bordeaux, Juventus and then Real Madrid - but there was one organisation which he never got the chance to play for.

"I am from Marseille, I left very young and I don't live here, but I return from time to time and I just know that I am Marseille," Zidane detailed in an interview with La Provence.

"It will be like this for life.

"When I was young, at 15, 16 or 17 years old, I was in the stands watching the [Marseille] games and I said to myself, one day, why not? But it didn't happen, it would have been something strong."

Zidane had to console himself with the career he ended up having, although he did get to play against Marseille, which provides him with a fond memory.

"It was in Marseille, when Franz Beckenbauer was the coach of the club, we won 1-0, it's a great memory," Zidane added.

"It makes me feel something to say that I won in Marseille, but for me it is still fabulous, if I go back to the pitch I remember it well.

"I had a friend in the team, who is my assistant today, David Bettoni."

Zidane has previous been cautious about the future of his coaching career, and it's not clear what kind of job he is looking for, if any.

Marseille are currently moving forward with Jorge Sampaoli, but it's clear from Zidane's words that he has a lot of reverence for the club, which could perhaps see him linked with the job the next time it is vacant.
