Carrick leaves Manchester United and won't be Rangnick's assistant

Michael Carrick's time as Manchester United caretaker boss has come to an end and, with it, so has his time at Old Trafford.

The former assistant coach has decided to leave the club, having worked closely with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho in his post-playing days.

"My time at this great club will always rank as the best years of my career," Carrick said as part of a Manchester United statement on Thursday.

"When I first signed over 15 years ago, I never in my wildest dreams could have imagined winning so many trophies and I will certainly never forget the fantastic memories both as a player and as a member of the coaching team.

"However, after a lot of thought and deliberation, I have decided that now is the right time for me to leave the club.

"I want to place on record my thanks to all of the players and a special mention goes to the backroom staff. Working long hours with such a great group of people has been a real pleasure and I have made some long-lasting friendships."

After Solskjaer was fired, Carrick stepped up to take over the team and was in charge for three matches.

They were three difficult matches too and he earned a 2-0 win at Villarreal, a 1-1 draw at Chelsea and a 3-2 win over Arsenal on Thursday night, in what proved to be his last night employed by the club.

In a difficult moment, Carrick managed to steer the ship and secure qualification for the Champions League last 16.

Ralf Rangnick is now set to take over on Friday as the new interim coach until the end of the season. The German will oversee his first game against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
