How is the relationship between Real Madrid and Dortmund?

All of Europe's top clubs are looking to strengthen their connections with Borussia Dortmund as a bidding war looks set to take place over striker Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian has been something of a goal machine since he joined BVB and now the next step in his career is fast approaching.

Real Madrid hope to have the edge over the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain as they, among others, battle for Haaland's signature.

Friends within the clubs

One major advantage Madrid may have over other clubs is the friendly relationship president Florentino Perez and Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke have with both conversing regularly in business and non-business topics.

This didn't help them though when it came to Achraf Hakimi's exit from the Bernabeu as the German club weren't able to match Inter's financial power and the Moroccan headed for Italy, despite spending the previous two seasons on loan at Signal Iduna Park.

This, however, is as far as the relations go between the two clubs and with a touted release clause set to derail any kind of favours from Watzke, Haaland could well choose to join a previous teammate or Norwegian compatriot over Madrid.

Haaland could join the club as a future replacement for 34-year-old Karim Benzema who, although enjoying one of his best seasons to date, is nearing the end of his career and Real Madrid's future could be built around Haaland should the 21-year-old choose the Spanish capital as his next destination.

The alternative, Kylian Mbappe from PSG, would be another star striker to lead Madrid's charge to glory and he could be available for free at the end of the season with negotiations stalled with the Ligue 1 leaders.
