Real Madrid most likely to face Chelsea in Champions League last 16

Real Madrid could be set for another Champions League meeting with Chelsea, just eight months after doing so in the semi-finals of last season's edition.

That's the prediction from stats guru Fran Martinez (@LaLigaenDirecto), who has run a probability test on who will face who in the last 16 of the competition.

Going by their numbers, and should Villarreal make it through to the knockouts on Thursday night in their rearranged fixture with Atalanta, Real Madrid have a 32 percent chance of facing Chelsea, with Paris Saint-Germain the next most likely on 19 percent.

Should Atalanta oust the Yellow Submarine, then the likelihood of a Chelsea-Real Madrid showdown goes down to 27 percent.

Atletico Madrid's opponent

As for Atletico Madrid's next opponents in the tournament, either Juventus or Manchester City look probable, with the former even more likely (22 percent) should Atalanta progress at the expense of Villarreal.

If Unai Emery's men do make it through, then they will face stiff opposition in the next round, with Juventus, Liverpool or Manchester City all looming with likelihood pairing rates of 19 percent.
