Novak Djokovic to be deported from Australia

Novak Djokovic will play no part at the Australian Open, and the ongoing saga around his entry to Australia will end with his deportation after a lot of back and forth.

The federal court on Sunday dismissed his bid to have his visa restored, upholding the decision to cancel it and refuse him permission to enter the country.

It has been explained that the decision was taken as Djokovic, being a "talisman of anti-vaccination sentiment", and his entry could risk "civil unrest" in the country.

"I respect the court's ruling and I will cooperate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the country," Djokovic said of the decision, though adding that he was "extremely disappointed".

"I am uncomfortable that the focus of the past weeks has been on me and I hope that we can all now focus on the game and tournament I love. I would like to wish the players, tournament officials, staff, volunteers and fans all the best for the tournament."

Djokovic had arrived in Australia on January 5, believing his visa had been granted on November 18 with a medical exemption approved by a Victorian government panel and Tennis Australia.

But his visa was first cancelled by Australian Border Force at Melbourne airport, sparking an ongoing feud between him, his representatives, and Australia.
