Report: Jacksonville Jaguars hire Doug Pederson as new HC

The Jacksonville Jaguars already have a new head coach following the tumultuous departure in the middle of the 2021 NFL season of Urban Meyer, it is former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson, who according to multiple reports from different media outlets will become the seventh full-time head coach and ninth overall in the history of the franchise that made the decision this Thursday night.

Byron Leftwich declined to remain in the process

Earlier, the favorite to fill the position, current Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich had told the team that once selected him as a first-round quarterback in the first round of a draft that he no longer wanted to be considered for the vacancy.

Last January 27, it had been reported that Leftwich had been chosen by the Jaguars, however, that rumor was immediately denied.

Doug Pederson's achievements

Pederson was head coach of the Eagles for five seasons (2016 to 2020) after being one of Andy Reid's top assistants with the Kansas City Chiefs, and will forever be remembered as the head coach who led Philadelphia to win its first Super Bowl when they defeated Tom Brady and Bill Belichick's New England Patriots 41-33 in the LII edition.

The Jaguars hope Pederson will help jump-start the career of now second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who was the first overall pick in the 2021 Draft out of Clemson University but failed to stand out in his rookie season after Meyer's chaotic administration.

Jaguars rebuilding era

Jacksonville will have for the second consecutive year the first overall pick in the Draft and Pederson will have to rebuild a roster that lacks star players.

With Philadelphia, Pederson drafted quarterback Carson Wentz, but after an injury in his second season in charge of Philadelphia, his place was taken by Nick Foles, who ended up being crowned MVP of the aforementioned Super Bowl LII.
