Messi hints at retirement after World Cup on his final game in Argentina

It's hard to accept but Leo Messi's career with Argentina is going through its final year, he played his very last official game for the national team inside his country. The legendary 'Bombonera' stadium was packed to bid farewell to the star, who scored the final goal of the evening and led his teammates to another win. This Messi is vastly different from the one playing for PSG right now, he truly enjoys representing his country and he was very aware this was his final game in front of his crowd. The stadium that cheered Diego Maradona so many times was ready to welcome one of the best Argentine players who ever lived, only second to 'Pelusa'. Leo finished the game and celebrated with a passionate 'Bombonera' crowd that was very emotional bidding farewell to their big star. Here's what he said right after the game.

I can only think about what's coming next, I only think about facing Ecuador. After the World Cup, I will have to rethink many things.

Lionel Messi after beating Venezuela

Leo isn't the only one who played his final game in Argentine soil for the national team, Angel Di Maria is another one of the veterans who performed and even scored a goal. Lionel Scaloni has managed to transform this team and turned it into one of the strongest in Conmebol, they are ready to play the upcoming World Cup in Qatar but we stillneed to see if they are ready to go all the way. During the entire qualifiers, they have been at the forefront of South American football with Messi as their great leader. Scaloni managed to help all the new blood understand how to coexist with the PSG star without making him feel alienated. As a result, the Copa America title in 2021 was one of the first great results they got out of this experiment.

Can Argentina win the FIFA World Cup with Messi?

This is a long stretch considering there are other teams such as France, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, Uruguay, England and Germany already qualified. It is true that Argentina has been one of the most consistent teams in the last couple of years but playing against the very elite will be a tough one for them. It all depends on how inspired and fit to play Leo Messi will be for that tournament. Keep in mind that Qatar in December will still feel like a desert with incredibly high teperatures. Leo has endured quite the run as the Argentina star, he finally lifted his first title with them but he obviously wants to retire after taking a final crack at trying to win the World Cup.
