Eintracht end Barcelona's Europa League adventure

After a 1-1 draw in the first-leg in Germany, many expected Xavi's charges to continue their excellent recent form and blitz beyond the German team, booking a semi-final place where they would have faced West Ham United.

However, this would not prove to be the case as the hosts simply failed to turn up on a night where they were embarrassed by the team placed ninth in the Bundesliga.

It took just four minutes for Frankfurt to open the scoring when Eric Garcia mistimed a challenge and a penalty was awarded to the visitors.

Filip Kostic would step up to take the spot-kick and he drilled it beyond Marc-Andre ter Stegen, putting them ahead in the tie.

Barcelona's problems worsened in the 36th minute of play when Rafael Borre was simply given too much space inside Barcelona's half and he launched a quite stunning strike into the net, totally wrongfooting Ter Stegen.

Kostic scored his second and Frankfurt's third in the 67th minute, receiving a defence-splitting pass inside the penalty area, allowing the Serbian international to place a fine shot into the bottom right corner.

Sergio Busquets thought he had pulled one back for Los Cules, firing a rebounded shot into the net, yet VAR disallowed it due to offside.

Barcelona and Busquets would eventually get a consolation goal deep into injury time, with the veteran midfielder scoring from the edge of the box.

Barcelona scored a penalty in the 11th minute of injury time through Memphis Depay, with goal-line technology judging the ball to have crossed the line, but it came too late as it was the last kick of the game.

Frankfurt will now meet West Ham United in the semi-final and Xavi will have to qualify for the Champions League in 2022/23 by virtue of finishing in the top four in LaLiga Santander.
