Liverpool go top after hammering Man United

Liverpool embarrassed Manchester United once again at Anfield on Tuesday night, swatting their bitter rivals aside like lower-league opposition in a 4-0 win that allowed them to keep maximum pressure on Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

United travelled to Anfield without Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese tragically lost his son on Monday, and the stadium stood to applaud for the forward in the seventh minute, with many in attendance singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' as a message of support to the former Real Madrid man and his partner Georgina Rodriguez.

On the pitch, Luis Diaz had already put the Reds with five minutes played, continuing his decent start to life as a Liverpool player. A well-worked move was finished by the Colombian after Mohamed Salah had found him to finish.

Salah then scored the first of two of his own goals, ending his drought on the end of a Sadio Mane assist, with the Senegalese rightly taking a lot of the plaudits for an excellent cutback.

Diaz had the ball in the net again before half time, though his strike was chalked off and Liverpool would have to wait until midway through the second half for their third goal. This time, Diaz was the creator and Mane finished past a helpless David De Gea.

Salah piled more misery onto Manchester United in the 85th minute with Liverpool's fourth.

The Reds end the night top of the table after the win, though City do have a game in hand to play which could see them restore their narrow one-point lead at the summit.
