Messi hails Benzema and the Frenchman responds

Once arch nemesis on the football field, Paris Saint-Germain's Lionel Messi has showered Real Madrid's Karim Benzema in praise, with the latter clearly valuing his generosity.

It came as Messi was asked about this year's Ballon d'Or, an award that Messi has won more than any other player with seven among his collection.

Messi's praise for Benzema

Earlier this week, Messi had pointed to the Frenchman as the best possible successor to win the Ballon d'Or after the PSG star won in 2021.

"I think there's no doubt, it's very clear that Benzema has had a spectacular year and he ended it winning the Champions League, being fundamental from the last 16 onwards in every game," Messi told TyC Sports.

"I think there's no doubt this year."

Beznema responds

During France's international break, in which Benzema scored in a home defeat to Denmark, the No.9 was asked about the praise.

"I heard Messi's words and they made me happy, very happy coming from a player like that," Benzema explained when asked about the statement.

"They give me motivation to do more."

When will Ballon d'Or winner 2022 be announced?

In a change of approach from previous years, this year's award will be based on seasons and not years, and so the award will be presented at a different date.

On August 12, the list of nominees will be published, and then the winner will be given their prize on October 17 in Paris.
