Manchester United are still trapped in a hell that they can't get out of

New coach, new season, renewed hopes... that was the mantra at Manchester United until Brighton arrived and stormed Old Trafford claiming their first win at the stadium in 113 years on Sunday.

It hasn't taken long for the optimism that enveloped Man United under new boss Erik ten Hag to give way to the first boos from the home fans.

Manchester United's descent into hell seems to have no end in sigh, and a club that once struck fear into English football is long gone.

"It's a hell of a job. We have to take the lessons and learn from them quickly. We don't have time and we have to deliver," said Erik ten Hag following his first defeat at Man United coach.

Adding to the tension is the fact that new signings Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia failed to generate much excitement amongst the Old Trafford faithful, especially as Cristiano Ronaldo's situation becomes increasingly untenable.

The Portuguese star is convinced that he has every reason to leave and Jorge Mendes will not rest until he gets his way.

Serious concerns still surround Manchester United

After the defeat against Brighton, several experts voiced their concerns and offered to provide an in-depth analysis of the current situation engulfing the red half of Manchester.

"The first thing you do when Manchester United's phone rings is turn down the offer, because the reality is that after losing that game against Brighton on Sunday... they are actually negotiating from an even worse position than they were in on Saturday, and that's an even bigger problem for them," said former player Gary Neville.

"I have a comment on everything in the world except reports that Manchester United signed Marko Arnautovic. I have nothing to say.

"We have seen Radamel Falcao, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Odion Ighalo, desperate, it's a pattern. It's happening over and over again. I don't even get angry anymore."

Roy Keane's hopes and a shot at Cristiano

Ex-Ireland international and current pundit Roy Keane added his two cents.

"If they get a few players over the next few weeks it's possible they could be in the top four," Keane stated.

"At the moment, you wouldn't say they are one of the favourites for the top four, but if they can close a couple of deals that they are clearly looking for, then you would have to say Man United have enough in their dressing room, coupled with the new manager, to compete in the Premier League."

In addition, Keane took advantage of his appearance on Sky Sports to fire a shot at Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I'm glad he didn't leave early," Keane said in a mocking tone with the former United captain recalling the Portuguese's departure from the stadium before the end of the game against Rayo Vallecano a week earlier.
