Tom Brady's retirement affects QB position for teams that wanted to sign him

Since before the season ended, dozens of rumors circulated about what would happen to Tom Brady after the Bucs were eliminated. There was much talk that he would most likely become a free agent and sign for another team that was in need of only a QB to compete for the Super Bowl.

His retirement affects the plans of several teams

By announcing today his retirement, according to him now "for good", teams that potentially could have signed him have to change their plans regarding their QBs. These are the teams most affected by the retirement of the legendary number 12 of the Pats/Bucs:

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs are without their starting QB for the past three years, and for 2023 only have Kyle Trask under contract, who has never played in the NFL. There is talk of several players the Bucs front office could pursue, including Derek Carr, Ryan Tannehill and Jimmy Garoppolo.

If none are available, they could take a gamble on Florida's Anthony Richardson in the draft, or with some Andy Dalton, Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew or Teddy Bridgewater-type free agent.

  • Miami Dolphins

Brady lives in Florida, has a home in Miami and there was a lot of talk that this would be the ideal team for him, as Tua Tagovailoa has had several injuries that have prevented him from playing a full season.

They are going to bet on him, but if he gets injured again maybe it would be good to have a good replacement like Minshew or Taylor Heinicke.

  • San Francisco 49ers

The Niners seemed to have solved their QB problems with Brock Purdy, as they would let Jimmy G walk, maybe look to trade for Trey Lance and have Purdy continue to mature. But the latter's injury in the NFC championship game is going to keep him out of action for more than six months.

The scenario was all set for Brady to play one last year with the team he'd been rooting for since he was a kid, but that's no longer going to be possible. So between Purdy and Lance they will have to compete for who will be the starter prior to the 2023 season.

  • New York Jets

After the failure that has been Zach Wilson, the New York Jets seem to be betting on taking a veteran QB, and Brady was one of their options. Although the strongest rumors point to the fact that now that Brady is gone, they will go all in for Aaron Rodgers, who is almost certain to leave Green Bay Packers.

If that's the case, he would be the second Packers QB the Jets would take, after Brett Favre was at their controls for one season in 2008. If not Rodgers, they can bet on Derek Carr or Lamar Jackson.

  • Las Vegas Raiders

After the departure of Derek Carr, it seemed that the Raiders would be the perfect destination for Brady because the head coach is Josh McDaniels, who was Brady's offensive coordinator for many years with the Pats and with whom he won several Super Bowls.

With Brady unavailable, the Raiders can bet on someone McDaniels also knows from his days in New England:Jimmy Garoppolo, who could work well with Davante Adams.

  • Tennessee Titans

When Brady left the Pats in 2019, the Titans were interested in him thanks to their coach, Mike Vrabel, being a former teammate of Brady's. Of the teams that were interested in Tom this offseason, the one that apparently has the most problems is Tennessee, as Ryan Tannehill is under contract through 2023, but they owe him $36.6 million, so they will likely release him and either let Malik Willis go or look in the draft.

They could also gamble on Derek Carr or some other free agent like Brissett, Heinicke or Bridgewater.
