Canelo Alvarez still ahead of Gervonta Davis as the face of boxing

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is still viewed as the face of boxing rather than American fighter Gervonta Davis as far as teh most important people in boxing are concerned.

Both Davis and Canelo have enjoyed the start to 2023 as they recently beat Ryan Garcia and John Ryder respectively, asserting themselves as the dominant forces in boxing.

It remained to be seen where they would be in the rankings and, what is a reality, is that the American boxer is far from being at the top of international boxing, according to the experts.

For Box Rec, Canelo Alvarez tops the list, followed by Dmitry Bivol, Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue, while Gervonta is far behind in seventh place.

Meanwhile, 'The Ring Magazine' still sees 'Tank' further away in a distant tenth place, but in this ranking Canelo does not have the preference of the experts, who placed him in fifth, behind Oleksandr Usyk, Naoya Inoue, Terence Crawford and Errol Spence.

Canelo on Gervonta Davis: More needs to be done

Following claims that placed Gervonta Davis as the new face of boxing with only one fight under his belt, Canelo Alvarez pointed out that a fighter needs to do more than that to earn the boxing title.

"You have to do a lot of things. There are a lot of good fighters coming, and one of them is Gervonta," Canelo said at a virtual press conference on May 5, while reiterating that it takes more than one fight against Ryan Garcia to achieve that status.

Canelo added that to be the new face of boxing he needs to "fight the best, over and over again, go up and down divisions, be undisputed, do what I've been doing my whole career.
