Vinicius Jr injured for six weeks, could miss Madrid Derby

Real Madrid's star forward, Vinicius Jr, is out injured for six weeks after suffering a thigh injury in the team's 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo.

The Brazilian winger limped off after 18 minutes in Madrid's fixture against the Galician outfit on Friday 25th August and is not expected to return until October.

The blow will be a key loss for Los Blancos as they lose a player who provided 23 goals and 21 assists in 55 games last season.

The 23-year-old ruptured his biceps femoris in the thigh of his right leg and has been confirmed to be absent from the next six weeks of football, unless he recovers faster than expected.

The injury occurred in the 11th minute of the team's victory of Celta Vigo as the forward pulled up following a sprint. After a brief chat with the club's doctors, he attempted to continue but lasted another eight minutes before dropping to the floor and signalling to be substituted.

Real Madrid's fixtures in September

  • 2nd Getafe (home)
  • 16th Real Sociedad (home)
  • 19-20th Champions League
  • 23-24th Athletic Club (away)
  • 26-27-28th Las Palmas (home)

As Vinicius managed to initially continue, Madrid was hopeful that the damage was not going to rule the forward out for much more than one fixture but it transpires that he could miss as many as four games.

The fixtures he could miss are three home games against Getafe, Real Sociedad and Las Palmas and a big away fixture to Real Madrid's intercity rivals, Atletico Madrid.

Another injury for Vinicius

The muscle injury is the third he has sustained at Real Madrid following his debut season, and a ligament injury in 2019.

Considering the frequency of play for both club and national team, Vinicius Jr has shown good durability as he went three consecutive seasons between 2020-2022 without an injury-related absence.

For Los Blancos, he made 139 appearances out of 159 opportunities so as the muscle injury isn't chronic and constantly recurring, it bodes well for the club once he navigates through the set-back.
