The Chiefs confirmed that Kelce will not participate in Thursday night's game against the Detroit Lions due to a knee injury he suffered in practice this week.

Kansas City is not going to risk Kelce getting a setback in the season kickoff and potentially missing more time putting at risk their goal of getting back-to-back championships.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider, Adam Schefter, this is the first game that Kelce has missed with an injury since 2014.

Decision to play was down to the wire

Ever since word got out that Kelce had suffered a knee injury, speculation about his availability for Thursday's season opener went wild around social media.

According to reports, the team was hesitant to allow Kelce to play, but the team had agreed to hold Kelce to a morning workout on Thursday to decide whether or not he was fit to suit up for the Chiefs.

Ultimately, while Kelce only presented mild discomfort, the team decided it was wisest to keep the player on the sideline and give his knee more time to heal.

It is now expected that the tight end will be 100% for Week 2's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars taking into account he will have 10 days until he steps on the field.
