Lewis Hamilton puts Checo Perez in an uncomfortable position amid Max Verstappen controversy
Formula 1 drivers criticized the FIA for the mild penalties imposed on Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen for incidents at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The infractions by the Red Bull drivers did not affect their positions after the race, which disappointed their rivals.
Prior to the Japanese Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and Checo Perez took part in an interview with F1 journalist Adam Cooper, who asked about the lack of penalties for Verstappen. The former encouraged the Mexican driver to share his opinion on the matter.
"Nothing to say on it," Perez replied.
Yet, Hamilton insisted: "Are you sure? You always have an opinion on things."
But Perez avoided to give a clear answer: "Not on this one. What should I say on this one? I pass it to you."
Then, Hamilton insisted: "Are you allowed to park at the end of the pit lane on the way out?"
To which Perez replied that they should "not wait for that long but it's something that probably in the future we're allowed now."
Hamilton didn't hesitate to offer his take on the issue.
"Just asking, because I didn't know. I don't really know what to say. I didn't really see them. Obviously I was in the pit lane when everyone stopped and I couldn't see what was happening up ahead. And we always push and work as closely as we can with the FIA to have consistency and there is some variation so we have to continue to work on it for sure."
