Conor McGregor is single-handedly tackling Ireland's homelessness issue
UFC legend Conor McGregor took to X (Twitter) on Friday to boast about his work to help end homelessness in Ireland. He claims to have built a 21-home housing estate and got families inside them right before Christmas, but the project is just getting started.
McGregor, 35, says his construction company is working on 1,000 homes across Ireland and that they are all for social housing. The UFC legend has been talking about doing this for quite some time and is finally taking action.
"Update on my end. I am now at close to 1000 homes in construction, readying for construction, or already completed construction across Ireland at the moment," McGregor tweeted. "All of which are for social housing, despite some reports (not surprised). I recently completed a 21-home housing estate that got families in and housed just before the Christmas!
"The run I am on with this, I am going to keep going! More sites, more work, more families housed. Do your part! Put your money where your mouth is! Don't just talk the talk. Walk the walk. McGregor Construction for Ireland."
Ireland's recent struggles with homelessness
McGregor's tweet was in response to a Raidió TeilifÃs Éireann (RTE) article explaining how Ireland's homelessness has increased by over 50 percent since the creation of its new government and their "Housing for All" program.
While many politicians just keep making excuses, Labour Party leader Ivana Bacik called the latest homelessness figures "intolerable". Over 13,000 people are homeless in Ireland as of November 2023.
"The Government must turn the tide on this national scandal," Bacik said. "It is simply not good enough to repeat the line that 'we have turned a corner on housing'."
