Berlin, July 14, 2024

Spain has reasserted its dominance over European football, claiming a record fourth UEFA European Championship title after defeating England 2-1 in a thrilling final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.

Completing a tournament they controlled from start to finish, La Roja capped their Euro 2024 campaign with a late winner from substitute Mikel Oyarzabal, who turned in a cross from Marc Cucurella in the 86th minute, just when the match seemed destined for extra time.

It was a crushing blow for England, whose long wait for a major international trophy now extends beyond 58 years. Despite a valiant second-half fightback and a superb equalizer from substitute Cole Palmer in the 73rd minute, England’s dreams were dashed once again, as Spain lifted the trophy under a cascade of confetti and fireworks.

Nico Williams had earlier fired Spain ahead with a brilliant goal just two minutes after halftime, setting the stage for another intense showdown between two of Europe’s finest sides.

With this victory, Spain adds 2024 to their list of European Championship triumphs in 1964, 2008, and 2012, solidifying their status as the continent’s most successful national team.

“Here we are, champions of Europe,” said a jubilant Nico Williams after the match. “We are thrilled and hope this can keep going — and we can go for the 2026 World Cup.”

As Spain celebrated, England was left to reflect on another agonizing near-miss — another chapter in its long story of heartbreak at major tournaments. The birthplace of modern football continues its search for a major men's title, the last of which came with their 1966 World Cup win.

For now, though, the night — and history — belongs to Spain.
