Salah to Depart Liverpool at End of Season After Nine-Year Spell

Liverpool have confirmed that Mohamed Salah will leave the club at the end of the season, bringing to a close a nine-year association that saw the Egyptian forward establish himself as one of the most prolific scorers in the club's history.

The 33-year-old reached an agreement to depart one year before his contract was set to expire, the Premier League champions announced Tuesday. His exit follows a season in which his relationship with manager Arne Slot became strained, culminating in the player publicly suggesting the club had "thrown me under the bus" after being dropped from the starting lineup for a period late last year.

In a farewell message posted to Instagram, Salah reflected on his time at Anfield. "Unfortunately the day has come," he wrote. "I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club. It's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit."

Salah departs having scored 255 goals in 435 appearances, placing him third on Liverpool's all-time scoring list behind Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. His trophy haul includes two Premier League titles, a Champions League, and a total of eight honors since joining from Roma in 2017. He also claimed the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions.

Liverpool issued a six-paragraph statement describing Salah as "one of the greatest players in Liverpool's history" and characterizing his tenure as "remarkable." The club noted that Salah had requested to announce his departure early "to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude" for supporters.

Salah will leave on a free transfer, meaning Liverpool will not receive a fee for a player who was previously the subject of a rejected bid from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad in 2023.

Currently sidelined with a muscle injury sustained in the Champions League, Salah is expected to return before the end of the campaign. Liverpool's final home match of the league season is scheduled for May 24 against Brentford, with a formal farewell planned later in the year.
