Premier League Record-Holder James Milner Calls Time on Historic 24-Year Career

James Milner hung up his boots Monday, and with them went the most durable career the Premier League has ever seen.

The 40-year-old midfielder, who finished up at Brighton after 24 seasons scattered across six top-flight clubs, leaves with one unassailable distinction: no one has played more English top-division matches than him. His 658 appearances set a record that may stand for decades.

"It feels like the right time," Milner said in a retirement announcement posted to social media.

He started as a 16-year-old at Leeds, his boyhood club, back when he briefly held the title of Premier League's youngest-ever goal-scorer. Two decades later, he had collected a full trophy cabinet: three Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, two FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Club World Cup. Along the way, he suited up for Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Brighton.

Milner also earned 61 caps for England, appearing at two European Championships and two World Cups.

"I could never have dreamed of the journey I've been on," he wrote. "I've been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country."

He closed his farewell message with a characteristically balanced nod to both supporters and critics: "To those who supported me every step of the way, your encouragement meant more than you'll ever know. And to those who gave me grief along the way, thank you too, you all played your part in making the journey memorable."
