Golf: Francesco Molinari wins British Open

Italian Francesco Molinari celebrates the biggest success of his career by winning the British Open.

Francesco Molinari won the 147th British Open and was the first Italian to win a major.

At the oldest and most important tournament in the world, the 35-year-old duped the elite and was the first Italian to celebrate a major triumph. A little later he held the coveted silver trophy "Claret Jug" in his hands and gave it a kiss.

Woods for a short time on victory course

Molinari may now run the title "Champion Golfer of the Year", his account got about the equivalent of 1.6 million euros heavier. On the super-heavy par-71 course in Carnoustie, Scotland, the world ranking 15 played on Sunday a round of 69, he prevailed with a total of 276 strokes in front of a quartet: Justin Rose (England), Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele (both USA) needed 278 strokes.

US superstar Tiger Woods also showed a strong performance on the super heavy par-71 course on the final day and finished sixth after a 71 with 279 strokes. It looked long-term as if the long-standing world number one could also play for the victory.
