Luka Modric is World Footballer of the Year 2018

For the first time since 2007, the World Player of the Year is not Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Croatian Luka Modric was crowned winner for the first time on Monday evening in London.

The playmaker of Real Madrid and the Croatian national team led his home country sensationally into the World Cup final this year, after he had won with the Real for the third time in a row the Champions League. "This trophy is not for me, it's for all my teammates from Real and the Croatian team," said the 33-year-old.

Female Footballer of the year was Marta from Brazil.

Goalkeepers of the year was Thibaut Courtois from Belgium, who moved from Chelsea to Real Madrid in the summer following his strong World Cup.

World Trainer of the Year is Didier Deschamps. The 49-year-old, who won the World Cup title with France in the summer, prevailed over Croatian team boss Zlatko Dalic and Zinédine Zidane.

Mohamed Salah was awarded the "Puskas Award" for the most beautiful goal of the season. The Liverpool striker received the award for his 1-1 draw with Everton in December 2017.
