DC Comics sues Valencia for bat logo

Curious trademark dispute between DC Comics and Valencia CF.

As reported by "RT Actualidad", the US comic book publisher has filed a lawsuit against the Spanish top club because of the similarity of the club's logo to that of the DC superhero "Batman" at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Both are the abstract illustration of a bat.

In this specific case, it is about a specially created for the 100th anniversary of the FC Valencia logo.

Valencia FC has been wearing the bat - the coat of arms of Valencia - since its founding in the 1910s. "Batman", however, was created only in 1939.

For club officials, it is out of the question "to give up the bat because DC Comics says so, there is no commercial brand that has exclusive bats worldwide," a spokesman for the club told El Confidencial.

As an indication of the year of birth of the beloved superhero, he adds: "When our club was already playing with a bat on its chest, they were still hunting bisons in the United States."
