Poland secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Austria in the opening game of Group G’s EURO 2020 qualifiers in Vienna on Thursday.

Krzysztof Piatek, the AC Milan forward, showcased his goal-scoring prowess yet again, finding the back of the net just ten minutes after being substituted on, leading his team to a crucial away win in their Euro 2020 qualifier against Austria.

The hosts started brightly, with Poland's goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny being forced to parry Marcel Sabitzer’s shot in the eighth minute. Austria's Marco Arnautovic had a chance to put his team ahead but scuffed his shot after Stefan Lainer's low cross found him unmarked in the penalty area.

Austria's goalkeeper, Heinz Lindner, made a crucial save in the first half, diverting Kamil Grosicki's low drive past the post. Despite Austria's relentless pressure, with Valentino Lazaro's shot going wide and Arnautovic coming close with a free-kick, it was Poland who took the lead.

Austria failed to clear a corner effectively, allowing the ball to fall to Tomasz Kedziora, whose strike was parried by Lindner, only for Piatek to head home the rebound.

Piatek missed an opportunity to extend Poland's lead moments later when a pass from Robert Lewandowski sent him through on goal, but he fired wide. Austria's Valentino Lazaro had an extraordinary miss, and Szczesny made a crucial save from David Alaba to preserve Poland's lead.

With the Euro 2020 qualifiers now underway, both teams will be looking to build on their performances as they prepare for the next stages of the competition. Poland's early triumph will undoubtedly boost their confidence, while Austria will be determined to bounce back and showcase their capabilities in the forthcoming matches.
