A tough situation for Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal

The European 2022 World Cup Playoff draw has led to Portugal and Italy being placed in Path C, meaning that one of the two will not make the finals in Qatar.

Manchester United and Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo will have to beat Turkey in their first playoff to then face the winner of Italy vs North Macedonia if they are to make the World Cup in a year.

Ronaldo, who is now 36, is facing a real prospect of his nation not qualifying for what is likely to be his final World Cup.

Portugal failed to top their qualifying group after they lost 2-1 to Serbia in Lisbon on November 14, conceding a late goal scored by Aleksandar Mitrovic, which saw the Serbs claim a place in Qatar.

Now with a tough playoff bracket which includes Euro 2020 winners Italy, Portugal face the prospect of missing out on the World Cup Finals after qualifying for the last five consecutive tournaments.

Since 2006, Cristiano Ronaldo has been at the heart of Portuguese football and will need his teammates on fine form if they are to win the two games standing between them and Qatar.

A World Cup without one of Portugal and Italy participating has been confirmed, now football fans will see which nation earns the right to feature in Qatar next year.
