Has Canelo matched Julio Cesar Chavez's legendary status?

Actualizado

By defeating Caleb Plant by knockout in 11 rounds last Saturday, Saul Canelo Alvarez became the first Mexican and Latin American boxer of all time to be the unified champion of the four major boxing organizations: WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF.

Mauricio Sulaiman's opinion

The stake that Julio César Chávez has been handing him as a boxing legend is today a reality.

Mauricio Sulaiman

This milestone, in the words of the President of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman equates the native of Guadalajara, Jalisco with the greatest glory of Mexican boxing, Julio Cesar Chavez.

"Canelo is as high as anyone can dream of in world sport. The stake that Julio César Chávez has been handing him as a boxing legend is today a reality," said Sulaiman.

Canelo put his record at 57 wins (39 by knockout), one loss and two draws, while Chavez accumulated 107 wins (86 by knockout), six losses and two draws.

"Canelo is forging his legacy and although every era is different I can say that he is at the top of any roster. What's left for us now is to enjoy him. I don't think there is still anyone who dares to doubt his quality and greatness," said Sulaiman.

Juan Manuel Marquez disagrees

You can't say that Canelo can be the best

Juan Manuel Marquez

This opinion does not coincide with those expressed by another great glory of Mexican boxing, Juan Manuel Marquez, who does not put Canelo at the highest level.

"The history of Mexican boxing is very rich, it has a lot, you can't say that Canelo can be the best of all history when we have seen the best, [Julio Cesar] Chavez, for example," he said in an interview for Deplaymaker.

"Dynamite" went a little further, accusing Canelo of putting a lot of conditions in his fights.

"There are many fighters who win world championships as I did and as several did, that is, fighting against the best and without putting rehydration clauses on the rivals, without depleting them and without telling them 'you have to do this'."
