Kontaveit beats Halep in Transylvania Open’s final

Transylvania Open’s singles final was dominated by no. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit (WTA 14), who defeated no. 1 seed Simona Halep in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Kontaveit was extremely aggressive and precise from the very beginning and she quickly went up to 5-1 in the first set. Simona then managed to break serve, but Anett immediately rebroke and took the set after less than 30 minutes.

Simona started great the second set and lost just one point in the first two games. Kontaveit wasn’t disturbed at all by the Romanian’s revival: she took the next five games and then Simona had to save three match points. The home fans’ favourite was uncapable of fighting back on Anett’s service game, and the Estonian ended the match with a white game, taking home the trophy.

Thanks to the points she won in Cluj, Kontaveit enters Top 8 on Monday and secures a place in WTA Finals. As for Halep, she will further go down in WTA rankings to 22nd place.
