Terence Crawford details regrets over Pacquiao fight

Terence Crawford has widely been seen as one of the great welterweight champions of his era, capturing the WBO belt in 2018, yet he has detailed his regrets over the failed Manny Pacquiao fight.

Crawford hasn't been able to secure a blockbuster fight since claiming the belt, and his big night with Pacquiao was supposed to be his crowning event.

Nobody expected the ageing Filipino to cause an upset against Crawford, but still, in beating the veteran it would have added a great deal of legitimacy to his title reign.

With Pacquiao now retired and moving into politics, that bout is pretty much dead, there is no chance of it happening.

"It would have been without a doubt a history duel between fighters that have reigned in several weight classes," Crawford detailed.

"I was real disappointed not getting that fight.

"We were two days from securing the fight, a lot of things happened, Manny Pacquiao's side lied to us, it's a whole bunch of things and reasons why that fight didn't happen."

Crawford will now take on Shawn Porter for the welterweight title on November 21, but it isn't the fight that the former wanted.

It's a high enough profile bout for Crawford to prove himself as champion, but it isn't the money-spinning event that would have coaxed buys out of casual boxing fans in the same way a clash with Pacquaio would have done.

"Everything happens for a reason, the fight didn't take place and we're here now," Crawford continued.

"Shawn Porter is the fight we're focused on most, more than any other possible matches."

The reason behind the Pacquiao fight failing is actually rather unusual, at least in an era when it is the demands of the PPV companies which put the kibosh on blockbuster events.

In this instance, though, it was the investment group that was propping up the event which pulled out, with Pacquiao's advisor, Michael Koncz, actually having obtained the investment which never came.

Adblock test (Why?)
