Unai Emery confirms he will not go to Newcastle United: I'm staying at Villarreal

Unai Emery confirmed on Wednesday to the owner of Villarreal, Fernando Roig, that he will stay at the club amidst interest from Newcastle United.

It is believed that Emery called the owner the morning after his side beat Young Boys 2-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 2.

The win gives the Yellow Submarine hope of progressing to the knockout stages of the competition, as they sit level on points with group leaders Manchester United.

During his time at the club, Emery has established Villarreal as a Champions League club following their Europa League triumph back in May 2021.

Despite his European success, the side have started slowly in LaLiga Santander, currently placed 13th with 12 points.

Newcastle's interest made many think that Emery would leave, given the new funds available to the north England club, who are now one of the wealthiest clubs in the sport.

Initially, it seemed that Emery entertained this idea and that Villarreal would not prevent him from leaving should he so desire.

Emery's change of mind

Owner Fernando Roig held talks with Emery, following comments made by the Basque coach in his post-match press conference after the Young Boys game.

"They have shown interest and I have not said no," Emery said.

His stance put a lot of pressure on the Champions League game, with many wondering how he would have been received by the Villarreal fans if they were not able to win the match.

For now, at least, Emery will remain at Villarreal.
