Unai Emery set to reject Newcastle United job

Reports of Newcastle United looking to appoint Unai Emery as their next manager had sped up in recent days, but now it looks that the Villarreal boss will turn down their offer to remain in Spain.

A number of factors seem to have led Emery to reject the approaches from one of the richest clubs in football, with a lack of clear vision from Newcastle's new owners being the key sticking point for the Spanish coach.

"There was a lack of a clear vision from the club. If you want him, do you approach him in such a rushed way... I don't see this move happening now this season," said Spanish football expert Guillem Balague to the BBC.

Emery under pressure

The news of Newcastle wanting Emery came at a time when he's been struggling for results in LaLiga Santander for Villarreal, as they sit 13th in the table.

Their 2-0 Champions League win over Young Boys on Tuesday night released some pressure on Emery, with the fans still having question marks over the coach.

Why did Newcastle want Emery?

UK news outlets suggested that Newcastle had whittled down their search for a new manager to Unai Emery and Eddie Howe, formerly of Bournemouth.

Despite a tough spell last time out for Emery in England when managing Arsenal, he has since been able to rebuild his career again with Villarreal, having won the Europa League in May 2021 against Manchester United.

Now, it looks like he wishes to continue building on what he has set out in Villarreal over moving to Newcastle.

Where next for Newcastle?

The news leaves Newcastle without a permanent manager, with Graeme Jones still in caretaker charge.

After their 3-0 defeat at home to Chelsea on Saturday October 30, they will want to act fast in appointing a permanent figure.

Now that Emery has ruled himself out of the job, Eddie Howe may get his change at St James' Park, with the task of avoiding relegation mounting and the possibility of one of world football's richest clubs playing in the Championship next season ever more likely.
