What Manchester United's poor season is costing Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United are facing their fifth consecutive season without a trophy, something which, among other consequences, could have a big impact on the money Cristiano Ronaldo stands to earn.

The Portuguese star will miss out on over six million euros in bonus payments stipulated in his contract, which were included, in part, to compensate for the large salary cut he took in order to return to the Red Devils from Juventus.

Those lost earnings aren't just down to the lack of trophies, however, as other objectives have also been missed. For example, according to the Sun, reaching the Champions League final would have been worth almost three million euros to Ronaldo.

Winning the Premier League, something United haven't done for almost a decade now, was also a valuable target and would have netted Ronaldo alone close to two million euros. Failure in both domestic cups also limited the 37-year-old's potential earnings this campaign.

Regular participation in the Champions League is naturally something highly desired by the Manchester United hierarchy, and Ronaldo's contract also includes a hefty bonus if the club finishes in the Premier League top four. Currently they sit sixth, with four points less and a game more played than Arsenal in fourth.

Manchester United's top scorer

There is one generous bonus that Ronaldo does look likely to earn this season, however, and that relates to his goalscoring exploits. He will be due an extra payment if he ends the campaign as the team's top scorer, which currently looks very likely as he has 18 goals, which is nine ahead of his nearest rival, compatriot Bruno Fernandes.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United homecoming isn't going at all to plan on the field, and that is having financial consequences for the player who is believed to now earn around half what he did at Juve.
