Mahomes still undefeated in divisional road games, pushes Chiefs past Chargers
The Kansas City Chiefs (8-2) defeated the Los Angeles Chargers (5-5) in a Sunday Night Football showdown that saw quarterback Patrick Mahomes lead an impressive game-winning drive down the stretch.
Mahomes, 27, threw for 327 yards and three touchdowns on 20-for-34 completions.
Tight end Travis Kelce was the recipient of all three TDs, finishing the game with 115 yards on six receptions.
Kansas City failed to score a touchdown in the opening quarter, but kicker Harrison Butker hit a couple of field goals that kept the team trailing 6-10 into the second frame.
Kelce, 33, scored his first TD before halftime to head into the break down 13-20.
The third stanza featured a single field goal from Butker, while Kelce's second TD gave the Chiefs a 23-20 lead to start the fourth period of play.
Patrick Mahomes leads game-winning drive
After running back Jerick McKinnon fumbled the ball for the first time since 2017, Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen made an amazing 46-yard catch on 3rd & 18 with less than four minutes of action left in the game.
Josh Palmer caught his second TD of the night, but quarterback Justin Herbert left too much time (1:46) on the clock for Mahomes to pull off another magic trick.
Herbert, 24, finished the game with 280 passing yards, two TDs and an INT on 23-for-30 completions.
There had been five lead changes in the contest when Mahomes started the game-winning drive with an 18-yard gain through the air.
After two incomplete passes, a holding penalty on the Los Angeles defense gave Kansas City an automatic first down.
Travis Kelce completes hat-trick
Sky Moore made a first down catch to keep the drive alive with less than a minute to play and Mahomes rushed for a new set of downs with 37 seconds remaining.
Mahomes found Kelce for his hat-trick and to cap off a six-play, 75-yard, game-winning drive.
Herbert had 31 seconds to attempt what Mahomes had just done, but he threw an interception instead to seal the Chiefs victory.
Mahomes has never lost a road division game and moves to a 14-0 record ahead of Sunday's clash against the Los Angeles Rams.
Chargers, meanwhile, will look to move back above .500 when they face the Arizona Cardinals next weekend.
