USMNT controversy: Eric Wynalda reveals big rift between Gio Reyna and Gregg Berhalter

One of the USMNT's star players is Gio Reyna, but in 180 minutes of play, coach Gregg Berhalter has only put him in seven, and everyone is wondering why. The answer may lie with former striker Eric Wynalda, who has stated on his social media that the reason is "a rift" between player and coach, which worsened after the draw with England.

He claims there is an internal fight with Berhalter

During a Twitter space hosted by the LA Times, Wynalda assured that there is "a huge controversy within the team, an internal fight with the coach, Gregg Berhalter".

"I don't know to what extent I should comment on that," Wynalda said. "I've been trying to console Gio's father, Claudio (his former USMNT teammate), for the last few hours and days with everything that's going on."

He also claimed that Berhalter has lied to the media by saying that Reyna was injured. "He asked the player to go along with that story, which caused a rift between the two and now he's on the bench, which is really unfortunate," Wynalda said. "This situation should have been handled very differently."

A problem that could get bigger

Reyna is injury prone, but if Wynalda's claims are true, a big internal problem is coming Berhalter's way. The former national team player pointed out that there is uneasiness among Reyna's teammates with the coach, especially because the player could be a key player for the team's better performance, although Berhalter assures that he has not used him for purely tactical reasons.
