The discussion between Scaloni and Messi that changed everything

Argentina's national team won the World Cup thanks in large part to their best player, Lionel Messi. The Argentine star won the best player of the tournament award and scored twice in the final against France.

He also scored a goal in the penalty shootout, so it was a spectacular performance to establish himself as the best player in history.

Buenos Aires erupts after Argentina defeat France on penalties to win World Cup

It can be said that the No.10 from Rosario did everything possible for Argentina to win their third World Cup star in history, but so did his coach Lionel Scaloni.

The relationship between the Lionels has been very important in achieving this success and, after the match, Scaloni revealed some details about a chat between them.

"I'm going to tell you something, about a chat I had with him in San Juan, after drawing 0-0 with Brazil," the coach said on Sunday.

"I felt that what was going to come was going to be difficult and that the disappointment could be strong.

"So, before he went back to Paris, I sat down to talk to Messi.

"I raised the issue with him and he told me 'we'll continue because it's probably going to go well and if it doesn't then at least we'll have tried'.

"That gave me a boost."

Messi's future with Argentina

Messi said before the final against France that it was going to be his last World Cup game, and Scaloni alluded to that too.

"For the time being, I think we should save a place for him for the next World Cup," he said.

"In 2026, he can have the opportunity in his pocket, if he wants to continue playing.

"I think he's earned the right to decide what to do with his football career, and with the Argentina national team he doesn't have anything more to prove, not that he ever did."

Finally, he referred to the leadership that Messi has shown with Argentina.

"The truth is that it is a real pleasure to have coached him, and also his teammates because what he transmits to his teammates is something I've never seen," the coach added.

"I've never seen anyone so influential with his teammates. And well, that's great."
