Eddie Hearn reveals who Dmitry Bivol will face before Canelo Alvarez rematch

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will have to wait if he wants a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. The Mexican's return to action could take place in May, but he will not take on Bivol before September if their fight is confirmed.

Meanwhile, Bivol has already found someone to fight in the meantime, as promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that he could face Joshua Buatsi in a voluntary defense of his WBA 175-lb title.

"I was shocked when I received a call from Eddy Reynoso, saying, 'Canelo wants revenge against Dmitry Bivol.' He [Canelo] wants another bite of the cherry," Eddie Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show.

"The way that fight played out, a rematch is extremely dangerous for Canelo Alvarez.

"We also need to provide Dmitry Bivol, in the meantime, a voluntary defense of his WBA 175-lb title because he's not going to sit around and wait while Canelo defends against a mandatory. Joshua Buatsi might be the guy that gets the voluntary defense [by Bivol]."

Bivol and Canelo will stay active before their rematch

The former will take on Buatsi, who has an impressive 16-0 record, while Canelo is expected to face John Ryder in London around May.

If the plans come to fruition and both fighters win their fights, Bivol and Canelo could face each other in September. It remains to be seen whether it would be a rematch at 175 pounds or if the Russian would go down to 168 to challenge the Mexican star and try to strip him of his four titles.
