Fighting Canelo Alvarez again could allow Bivol to have a historic 2023

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez has yet to schedule a fight for 2023, but he is planning to return to the ring in May with a rematch fight against Russian Dmitry Bivol.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who has collaborated with Canelo in his last few fights and is also in charge of promoting Bivol, stated that the Russian boxer may benefit from accepting a rematch with his Mexican counterpart.

"When you're talking about chasing greatness, about legacy, Dmitry Bivol is a fighter who is all about that," Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show.

"He has a chance to rematch Canelo Alvarez for undisputed at 168lbs, and then move and fight Artur Beterbiev for undisputed at 175lbs.

"I feel that Canelo against Bivol at 168 would enable Dmitry Bivol to try and become undisputed at 168 lbs."

The chance for Bivol to make history

Bivol could fight for the undisputed championship at 168 lbs before returning to the 175 lbs division to face three-belt champ Artur Beterbiev.

Should he defeat Alvarez, Bivol would have the opportunity to be absolute champion in two different categories and become one of the only two boxers to have done so along with Henry Armstrong.

Bivol's thoughts on a Canelo rematch

As light heavyweight champion, Bivol has the luxury of choosing against whom he wants to defend his title.

However, he is not planning a rematch against Alvarez and even made clear in a recent interview that he does not care about Canelo's intention.

"I don't care to be honest," Bivol told IFL TV.

"I don't want to depend on his decisions for who he wants to fight.

"I just want to fight, I want to fight for four belts.

"If I don't get this fight, then give me another fight and I will be patient."
