Real Madrid scrape past Getafe with another late Bellingham goal

Real Madrid left it very late to defeat Getafe 2-1 at the new look Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday afternoon, with Jude Bellingham popping up with the crucial strike.

It was an awful start for the hosts, as their academy graduate Borja Mayoral rounded Kepa and slotted through the legs of Antonio Rudiger for a surprise opener.

The goal sparked Los Blancos into life as they threw everything forward in pursuit of a comeback.

It almost came through Joselu midway through the half. Fran Garcia burst forward down the left and crossed perfectly into the path of the striker but David Soria made a good save.

Then, Bellingham fell inside the box and the referee awarded a penalty to Real Madrid with no hesitation. However, replays clearly showed that the Englishman had dived, and the decision was overturned, although no yellow card was shown to the former Borussia Dortmund player.

Los Blancos started the second half exactly as Carlo Ancelotti would have asked for, with an early goal, although not without controversy.

A corner for Madrid found Rudiger who seemed to handle the ball. It was cleared but then crossed back in and, as Djene failed to deal with the clearance, the ball fell kindly to Joselu who scored from close range.

However, Joselu appeared to be offside, although VAR deemed the goal to be fine, even though no subsequent replays were shown with the lines drawn.

From that point on, it seemed only one team were going to win the game. Dani Carvajal cleverly shaped to cross before shooting towards the near post but, with Soria beaten, the post denied him.

Toni Kroos then had an effort which hit the post, as Madrid threw everything at their opponents.

As the game entered injury time, Rodrygo's numerous wayward efforts were frustrating the crowd.

However, the winner would eventually come. Lucas Vazquez's hopeful effort was spilled by Soria into the path of Bellingham who poked home to announce himself to his new home.

It was another scrappy win for Real Madrid and not without controversy, but all Ancelotti will care about are the three points.
