Munich, Germany - Bayern Munich overturned recent history against Real Madrid on Wednesday, scoring twice in the final minutes to secure a 4-3 victory and a 6-4 aggregate win that sends the Bavarian club to the Champions League semifinals.
Luis Díaz found the net in the 89th minute, three minutes after Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga was sent off, and Michael Olise added a spectacular stoppage-time strike to seal the result at the Allianz Arena. The win ends a streak of four consecutive two-legged knockout defeats to the Spanish giant for Bayern.
The match was not without controversy. Camavinga received a second yellow card in the 86th minute for what Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa described as an "innocuous challenge" on Harry Kane. Madrid players surrounded referee Slavko Vinčić after the final whistle, and Arda Guler, who scored twice for the visitors, was shown a red card for his protests.
"Everything was over with the red card," Arbeloa said. "You cannot send off a player for this action."
The game began at a blistering pace. Guler opened the scoring after just 34 seconds, capitalizing on a misplaced pass from Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Aleksandar Pavlović equalized in the sixth minute with a header. Guler restored Madrid's lead with a brilliant free kick in the 29th minute, though Bayern had legitimate complaints about the foul that led to the kick.
Harry Kane leveled again in the 38th minute, scoring his 12th goal of the Champions League campaign and his 50th across all competitions for Bayern. Vinícius Júnior then set up Mbappé to give Madrid a 3-2 lead on the night in the 42nd minute.
No further goals arrived until the late red card and subsequent Bayern strikes.
Bayern will face defending champion Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals. Arsenal also advanced on Wednesday, defeating Sporting Lisbon to set up a semifinal against Atlético Madrid.
