Outpacing a Legend: Leclerc Signs New Ferrari Contract After Dominating Hamilton

When Ferrari signed Lewis Hamilton, the narrative wrote itself. A seven-time world champion joining the sport's most iconic team. A veteran mentor for Charles Leclerc. A dream partnership destined for glory.

Then the racing started.

Eighteen months later, Ferrari has handed Leclerc a new multi-year contract, and the numbers explain why.

The 28-year-old Monegasque has outqualified Hamilton more often than not. He has finished ahead of him in the drivers' standings. And through five rounds of the 2026 season, Leclerc sits third overall, three points clear of his legendary teammate in fourth.

Fred Vasseur, Ferrari's team principal, didn't mince words when announcing the extension Wednesday.

"Over these seasons, we have seen him grow," Vasseur said. "Not only into one of the strongest drivers in Formula 1, but also a person who is completely at one with the team and everything Ferrari represents."

Leclerc joined Ferrari's driver academy in 2016 and stepped into the main seat three years later. Since then, only Michael Schumacher has made more F1 starts for the Scuderia. Only Schumacher has claimed more poles. The one glaring omission from Leclerc's résumé is a world championship, a void both he and the team acknowledged in the announcement.

"Together we've shared incredible moments and some tougher ones," Leclerc said. "But I believe in this team more than ever, and I'm deeply grateful that we will keep pushing side by side toward our shared goal of bringing the world championship back to Maranello."

The timing of the announcement, just before the Monaco Grand Prix, where Leclerc won in 2024, feels deliberate. A homecoming. A statement of faith. And a reminder that at Ferrari, the future still belongs to the driver who grew up in the academy, not the superstar who arrived from outside.
