World Para-athletics European Championships: 6 Medals for Germany

Paralympics winner Niko Kappel struggled with silver and lost the world record, while Lindy Ave used the first opportunity for gold:

The German Para athletes won six medals on the first day of the European Championships in Berlin - but not all of them were the precious metal.

Kugelstoßer Kappel, one of the stars in German disability sports, not only missed the European title, the 23-year-old from Sindelfingen also lost his approximately two-month-old world record to his victorious Polish rival Bartosz Tyszkowski on Monday in the F41 class.

Clearly pleased was Lindy Ave, who gave the German Disabled Sports Association (DBS) the first and only gold of the day. The 20-year-old from Greifswald won in the start class T38 in personal best time of 1: 04.12 minutes over 400 m. Ave won in front of Britain's Ali Smith (1: 04.95) and Maria Fernandes from Portugal (1: 10.37).
